Mastopexy - Breast Lift Surgery
A woman's breast can change over time, often losing firmness and a youthful shape or height. This can be due to pregnancies, nursing, weight fluctuation, gravity, aging, hereditary makeup or even prior breast surgeries. A mastopexy, whether minimal (a crescent lift) or more extensive, (a lollipop or standard lift) are designed to raise the breasts by removing excess skin, in some cases reshaping or making the areolas smaller and also tightening the surrounding breast skin to support and recontour the new breast shape.
When Dr. Brian Hass, board certified plastic surgeon does a breast lift he can help put breast tissues into a more youthful position, however if a significant size change is desired then the procedure may also be combined with a breast reduction. If a woman desires a more rounded look to the top of their breasts, and has lost volume, then a mastopexy can also be performed with a breast augmentation. These procedures would be discussed at your consultation to determine the right type of lift for your desired look.
Types of breast lifts:
CRESCENT LIFT - in some cases once an implant is placed behind the chest wall muscle, the only thing that may need further enhancing to complete the lift is a repositioning to the nipples. A crescent lift is then recommended and is a short procedure added onto a breast augmentation surgery that gives the nipples a more even or lifted look. An ellipse of skin is removed from the top part of the nipple leaving a minimal scar that is generally not noticeable after complete healing. The final look gives the breast a very youthful and shapely nipple to enhance the lift from breast implant placement. Because patients often have one breast larger than the other, this lift can complement breast augmentation with much added scarring.
LOLLIPOP LIFT - This type of lift can be performed with or without implants, and would be the next type of lift to help a patient achieve a more youthful breast shape. Excess skin is removed through an incision around the nipple and down the middle of the breast. When done in conjunction with a breast augmentation, this type of lift gives the breast a gentle lift for those who may not have as much droop to start, but have more droop than a crescent lift would remedy. Although there are more incisions, most patients find the scars heal beautifully and are not noticeable with time. Keep in mind, that at Hass Plastic Surgery & Medispa we have many suggested solutions to help patients diminish scars so they become virtually invisible.
STANDARD MASTOPEXY - This type of lift is more traditional and certainly will give someone more of a lift if they do have excess skin and sagging. Although the incisions are also around the nipple and down the middle of the breast, there is also an incision in the fold of the breast to remove further excess skin and provide a more dynamic lift to the breast. Patients can include a breast augmentation at the same time, if what they desire is a fuller upper breast, however in many cases patients are happy with the decreased droop and shapely lift this procedure provides. Incisions for this lift are similar to that of a breast reduction, yet significant breast tissue is recontoured rather than removed in order to give the breast its more youthful look.
