This is the question on the minds today for many women who have breast implants, and for those considering them. On July 24th, 2019, at the request of the FDA, Allergan issued a voluntary recall of their Biocell Textured Breast Implants. In recent years, there have been 573 cases and 33 deaths worldwide from a very rare cancer known as Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma or BIA-ALCL. This is among the many millions of women who have breast implants worldwide. These cancers are mostly associated with textured breast implants and more specifically with the type of texturing on the surface of Allergan’s textured implants. In the United States, textured implants are less than 5% of the market. In some countries, textured implants are up to 80% of the market. By comparison, in South Florida, most surgeons use smooth implants, which are not part of the recall. In our practice, we use Mentor smooth implants, which are not recalled.
What Should I Do If I Have Implants?
For now, if you have smooth implants you don’t need to do anything. All available evidence indicates they are safe. If you have textured Mentor implants you don’t need to do anything. Available evidence suggests they are safe. If you have Allergan textured implants and are having no issues, you don’t need to do anything more than monitor for pain or swelling. If these occur, you should see your doctor. If you are unsure what type of implants you have, you should contact your plastic surgeon. As always, if you have concerns or symptoms you should see your doctor. Remember, millions of women worldwide safely enjoy the benefits and added confidence they have with their breast implants.
