A Fresh New Look with Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty (or cosmetic eyelid surgery) is the procedure of choice for puffy or sagging eyes caused by aging and genetics. An eyelift is a procedure that removes extra fat, skin, and tightens muscles in the lower and upper eyelids, creating a more youthful look. It's a quick cosmetic surgery that takes around an hour under IV sedation to complete, but the effects are long-lasting and quite rewarding. Hass Plastic Surgery is a cutting-edge facility with a friendly ambiance. Our highly qualified oculoplastic and cosmetic surgeons are here to help you achieve a refreshed look for your eyes. As people age, their upper and lower eyelids often become puffy or saggy, which may lead to a tired, older appearance. Hass Plastic Surgery doctors perform blepharoplasty on men and women in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, Palm Beach, Wellington, and the neighboring counties of Florida.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Hit ‘refresh’ for your eyes

Blepharoplasty, or cosmetic eyelid surgery, can help improve the look of your upper and lower eyelids to give you a rejuvenated look of being more rested, energetic, and youthful. With Blepharoplasty Palm Beach Gardens patients can treat:

  • Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris.
  • Fatty deposits appear as puffiness in the upper lids or bagginess in the lower lids.
  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid and lower eyelids. In some cases, sagging skin can impair vision.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

A functional, cosmetic solution

Good candidates for eyelid surgery are generally adult men and women who have healthy facial tissue and muscles AND have realistic goals for improvement. Patients should be healthy and not have medical conditions that can impair healing. You will review any eye conditions, such as glaucoma, dry eye, or a detached retina, at your consultation. You should also share any other health conditions such as thyroid disorder, Graves’ disease, cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure, vision impairment, or blindness. More importantly, you should be honest with the Hass surgeons in sharing your expectations for the surgery. Typically, conditions related to eyelid droopiness appear as part of the natural aging process or, in many cases, are due to genetics. In this situation, patients as young as their 20s or 30s may significantly improve their eyes through blepharoplasty. For more mature patients, eyelid surgery removes excess skin, eliminates bags, and restores firmness to the area surrounding the eye, giving a more rejuvenated eye area without a surprised look.

How is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

dramatic, long-lasting improvements

Our Palm Beach Gardens Blepharoplasty procedure, or eyelift, is done through small incisions hidden within natural skin folds. Various amounts of skin and fat are removed, and muscles are tightened. Scars heal well and are generally imperceptible within weeks. In some cases, the lower eyelid surgery can be treated using incisions made on the inside of the lower eyelid, with no external scars, which is called a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. Either way, our surgeons tailor eyelid surgery to the needs of each patient.

Most patients find minimal bruising, generally only lasting about ten days to two weeks when most patients are back to all their everyday routines. Though these procedures are usually performed within one to two hours, the improvements in appearance are often dramatic and long-lasting.

As Dr. Andrea Hass explains, “This training has given me the keen awareness for the nuances required to give patients a refreshed and naturally shaped eyelid while also protecting the eye’s health. While I focus my practice in oculoplastics, I do maintain my board certification in ophthalmology, and I am an active member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (www.ASOPRS.org).” At Hass Plastic Surgery, we strive to provide the best Blepharoplasty Palm Beach Gardens has to offer!

BlepharoplastyFrequently Asked Questions

If your eyelid’s position interferes with your peripheral vision, upper eyelid surgery may be covered by insurance. This can happen if your upper lid covers a portion of the center of your pupil, called “ptosis,” or if your lids have excess skin hanging over your lashes, called “dermatochalasis.” Patients with this condition feel like they look tired or even angry from the lid's heaviness.

In order for this surgery to be covered, insurance companies (i.e. Medicare) will generally require patients to get a visual field test with their ophthalmologist. They may also require the doctor to submit photos identifying the ptosis or dermatochalasis in order to be pre-qualified for surgery. It’s always good to check with your insurance provider about your coverage options. For more questions, don’t hesitate to contact our team, and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have on insurance vs. cosmetic options.

Eyelid surgery is not very painful. Most patients will need only minimal pain medication for the first day or two. Many switch to Tylenol for pain control after the first few days.

Bruising can vary from 10 days to 2 weeks after surgery. two weeks after receiving Blepharoplasty, patients can wear full eye makeup, and most patients feel comfortable going out in public.

It is imperative to avoid all medications and supplements that might thin the blood for at least two weeks before surgery to minimize your bruising and swelling post-operatively. It is also essential to resolve any skin irritation and issues before surgery.
