Blepharoplasty in West Palm Beach, FL

Also known as blepharoplasty, cosmetic eyelid surgery with Oculoplastic Surgeon, Dr. Andrea Hass, can help improve the appearance of your upper and/or lower eyelids to give you a rejuvenated appearance, making you look more rested and energetic. As men and women age, their upper eyelids tend to sag and lower eyelids can become puffy, which certainly can lead to a tired and older appearance. Dr. A offers blepharoplasty for men and women in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, Palm Beach, and the surrounding areas of Florida.

Blepharoplasty can help treat:

  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
  • Fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris (colored portion of the eye)
  • Excess skin of the lower eyelid

Typically, these conditions appear as part of the natural aging process, or in many cases, are due to heredity. In the case of heredity, patients as young as their 20s or 30s may achieve a great improvement to their eyes through blepharoplasty. For more mature patients, eyelid surgery removes excess skin, eliminates bags, and restores firmness to the area surrounding the eye, giving you a more rejuvenated and youthful eye area without looking startled or surprised.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Good candidates for eyelid surgery are generally adult men and women who have healthy facial tissue and muscles AND have realistic goals for improvements of their eyelid area. You should not have medical conditions that can impair healing. At your consultation with Dr. Andrea Hass, you will also review any eye conditions you may currently have or had, such as: glaucoma, dry eye, or a detached retina. You should also share any other health conditions such as thyroid disorder, Graves’ disease, cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure, vision impairment or blindness. More importantly, you should be honest with Dr. Hass in sharing your expectations for the surgery.

How is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Blepharoplasty surgery is done through small incisions hidden within natural skin folds. Various amounts of skin and fat are removed and muscles are tightened. Scars heal well and are generally imperceptible within weeks. In some cases, the lower eyelid surgery can be treated using incisions made on the inside of the lower eyelid, with no external scars, which is called a transconjuctival blepharoplasty. Either way, at Hass Plastic Surgery & MediSpa, Dr. Andrea Hass tailors eyelid surgery to the needs of each individual patient.

This out-patient procedure is performed under twilight or IV MAC sedation in our AAAASF certified facility in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. It is not a painful procedure and patients find that their recovery consists of some minor swelling and discomfort, which is normally controlled with cold compresses and pain medication. Most patients find their bruising is minimal, generally lasting about two weeks, which is also when most patients are back to all their normal routines. Though these procedures are generally performed within one to two hours, the improvements in appearance are often dramatic and long lasting.

Why Consider an Oculoplastic Surgeon for Your Eyelid Surgery?

See below for the benefits of partnering with an oculoplastic surgeon, as explained by Dr. A:

Oculoplastic surgeons are board certified in ophthalmology (eye surgery) and have completed specialty training in plastic surgery of the eye and upper face, eye sockets, and tear duct system. This training has given me the keen awareness for the nuances required to give patients a refreshed and naturally shaped eyelid while also protecting the eye’s health.

While I focus my practice in oculoplastics, I do maintain my board certification in ophthalmology and I am an active member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (www.ASOPRS.org).

Procedures I perform consistently include: cosmetic eyelid and brow lift surgery (endoscopic and traditional), repair of droopy eyelids, tear duct obstructions, removal of tumors or lid lesions, as well as wrinkle correction using many of the popular injectables, lasers and chemical peels. Although many plastic surgeons do perform eyelid surgery, it is my unique qualifications that lend itself to be most specialized when it comes to upper face rejuvenation. When you combine my eyelid, brow lift, and injectable expertise with my husband’s, Dr. Brian Hass, (who performs lower face, neck, nose and cosmetic breast and body surgeries) you get a truly unique opportunity for receiving specialized care with fantastic results.

Is Upper Eyelid Surgery Ever Covered By Insurance?

Upper eyelid surgery may be covered by insurance if your eyelid’s position interferes with your peripheral vision. This can happen if your upper lid covers a portion of the center of your pupil, called “ptosis,” OR if your lids have excess skin hanging over your lashes, called “dermatochalasis.” Patients with this condition feel like they look tired from the lid heaviness – OR friends and family are always telling them, “You look tired!”

In order for the surgery to be covered, insurance companies (and Medicare) will generally require patients to get a visual field test with their ophthalmologist. They may also require the doctor to submit photos identifying the ptosis or dermatochalasis in order to be pre-qualified for surgery within a certain time frame. It’s always good to check with your insurance company for their coverage parameters. For more questions, don’t hesitate to contact our office and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have, whether your condition is medical or cosmetic.
