What Happens During Liposuction?
Liposuction is an out-patient procedure and is performed in our Hass Plastic Surgery AAAASF surgical facility in Palm Beach Gardens. The procedure usually takes one to three hours and is performed under IV sedation (not general anesthesia), which makes the procedure safer and decreases the chance of post-operative nausea and fatigue. Incisions for liposuction are very tiny and inconspicuously placed in a crease or area of the body that might be covered by clothing. Tumescent solution (saline mixed with lidocaine) is then placed into the fatty areas to be liposuctioned and then the liposuction procedure is performed. There is minimal blood loss and no drains are used post-operatively. Patients wake up with a compressive garment or girdle to compress the areas that were treated. This will be required for two to four weeks. At our office, it is common for liposuction to be safely combined with other surgeries such as breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, Brazilian butt lift, or even facial work to optimize recover times.
What is the Recovery Like After Liposuction?
Once you’ve recovered in our center, a family member or friend will need to pick you up and stay with you for at least 24 hours after surgery. There is usually some minor soreness after the surgery, but this is easily controlled with pain medication. Minor swelling occurs, but generally disappears rapidly over the next one to three weeks and will continue to get better over the next three months. Most patients will have little bruising and generally are resuming many activities within the first week, but certainly back to a normal routine in four weeks. Some of our patients even return to work the next day, although most will take a long weekend for their recovery.
What Results Can I Expect from Lipo?
Lipo results can be quite dramatic and can help to give you the beautiful, balanced and proportioned body contours that only get better over the next three months. Most patients feel more confident and certainly more comfortable in the way their clothes fit. Keep in mind this is not a weight loss promise, even though liposuction results are long lasting.
What is SAFE Lipo?
Most liposuction techniques done today are very safe, but the most common problem after liposuction is contour irregularity. SAFE lipo is a new and different liposuction technique performed by Dr. Brian designed to minimize contour irregularities while getting out the most fat possible. SAFE lipo is an acronym that stands for Separation, Aspiration and Fat Equalization. In the first step, the fat is separated from its fibrous attachments so that the fat is now free floating under the skin. This allows Dr. Brian to be very aggressive about breaking up firm areas of fat without worrying about over resecting (i.e., causing divots) because he is not sucking out the fat at this time. After separation, the freed up fat is lightly sucked out.
Occasionally, there are some stubborn areas of firm fat left behind, and that is when fat equalization is done without using suction to free up those last fibrous attachments in order to leave a nice, smooth contour. This technique has several other advantages, as it also separates blood vessels and nerves from the fat, resulting in less bleeding and no permanent nerve injury. Also, with the SAFE lipo technique, the fat is broken up into small particles, which makes the quality of the fat perfect for grafting. The fat can be taken to augment the buttocks in a Brazilian butt lift, to use as filler in the face, to treat aging hands, or to augment the breast. SAFE lipo is not a new gimmick, fancy machine, or trend. It is a surgical technique that is the new gold standard in cosmetic liposuction procedures.
